About Us

Welcome to Legacy Cockapoos where sound health and temperaments come first!
We are a small home based breeder in Beaverton ON. Let me start off by saying all our breeding dogs are pets first an foremost and remain in our home or in their guardian home their entire life and are never re-homed when they are no longer suitable for breeding! We believe every dog deserves to live a family lifestyle just like any other pet. Our dogs never live in a kennel environment, they are all bed warmers and couch potatoes here! The health and happiness of our dogs comes first and foremost! We only breed a few litters a year to ensure we have time to care for each puppy born to us properly. All are puppies are raised in a loving family environment and handled by children from birth. We do not separate our puppies from their Mother when they are weaned, but rather they are to free interact with Mom until the day Mom leaves for to return to her guardian home. We understand the importance of a Mama dog teaching correct edict to their pups and build their confidence, we have a resident retired Mama that takes on that roll for all our Legacy pups once there own Mama's leave to ensure your puppy receives that very important education that only a Mama dog can give. We believe this makes for a more well balance, confident and outgoing dog! We believe in strong genetics not "hybrid vigor" make healthy dogs!
We breed 2nd and 3rd generation Cockapoos and the odd back breeding to Poodles.
My love affair with Cockapoos started in 1996 when I received my first Cockapoo. A beautiful Sable girl which I named "Samantha". I quickly fell in love with her many wonderful qualities. Sadly I was told like many people "hybrid dog" means "hybrid vigor" and my dog would be healthier than any purebred dog because of this. WRONG! This is a half truth. While combining two different breeds does limit the amount of genetic disorders passed on due to a large gene pool, any genetic disorder both parent breeds carry can be passed onto their offspring. Unfortunately "Samantha" developed Progressive Rod Cone Atrophy (PRA-PRCD) this meant at a young age she went completely blind from her retinas detaching. She also had grade II luxating patella (knees popped in and out of joints) .These are both well known disorders in both Cockers and Poodles. I also had a grooming client with a Cockapoo from the same breeder (but different litter and parents) that also developed PRA-PRCD (this dog went completely blind in 2 weeks). Imagine my frustration and anger to learn that this is a hereditary disorder that had been passed on from their parents due to bad/ignorant breeding practices. This experience spurred me into researching Cockapoos and their breeders. I was shocked that I could find not breeders doing any health/DNA testing/screenings of any kind on their Cockapoo parents in Canada. As far as I could tell 90% of "breeders" were back yard breeders with a Cocker and a Poodle looking to make a quick buck! And the other 10% wanted you to be impressed with their breeding dogs fancy purebred registration papers which means nothing for a hybrid puppy! No one really seemed to care about the genetic soundness of their dogs. Shouldn't hybrid dogs be held to the same health standards as purebred dogs? I thought so! And so started this wonderful life filling adventure onto breeding Cockapoos.
